A Living Blessing from Our Patriarch

"How have you been? Have you been resting well? Is everyone in your home safe and peaceful? As for me, I am well, truly well, thanks be to God. May God protect you all. May the Lord Savior keep you safe, guide you, and bless you with a long, healthy life. Amen. We shall meet again when God wills it."

The Extraordinary Life

His Story

I

Birth and Sacred Beginnings

Kegn Geta Aba Mezmur Hawaz was born into a heritage of deep faith on Tahsas 19, 1912 ዓ.ም in the historic city of Gondar. He drew his first breaths inside the very compound of the Gimja Bet Mariam Church. He was born to his esteemed father, Like Ma'emiran Hawaz Toruneh, who served as the church administrator, and his beloved mother, Emebet Aberash.

II

A Lifelong Pursuit of Spiritual Wisdom

His path of spiritual education began at Gimja Bet Mariam Church, where he mastered the alphabet and the Psalms of David. He then pursued extensive studies under three legendary masters — Memhir Zenawi (Wudase Mariam, Anqetse Berhan, Melka Mariam, Melka Iyesus), Memhir Gebre Iyesus in Sekela (the intricate art of Aquaquaam, leading to his ordination as deacon by Abune Michael), and Memhir Gebre Sellassie (the profound art of Qene, earning him the formal church title of Kegn Geta).

III

A Champion of Modern Law and Justice

In 1950 ዓ.ም, Aba Mezmur turned his sharp intellect toward modern legal studies. After completing judicial training administered by the Supreme Court, he served the community with absolute integrity as a Judge and Defense Advocate for more than 30 consecutive years, standing as a pillar of the Gondar Advocates Association.

IV

The Holy Monastic Vows

Anchored in the sacraments alongside his lifelong companion Emebet Asmarech, the couple together received the sacred Order of Monasticism on Hidar 21, 2009 ዓ.ም from Abune Elsa. Even as his body grew frail, his spirit remained unyielding — he spent his final years reciting the Psalms every single day from 6:00 AM until 1:00 PM without fail.

V

A Peaceful Departure

Aba Mezmur lived a full, radiant life of 106 years. Having been granted the rare wisdom of knowing when his earthly journey was drawing to a close, he prepared his soul and peacefully departed to his Creator on Ginbot 7, 2018 ዓ.ም — quietly in the morning hours, completely free from the agony of illness or pain.
